Woodland Industries, Inc. in Griffin, GA is a manufacturer of asphalt roofing felt. Roofing felt is made by saturating rolls of felt with liquid asphalt, then re-rolling the felt after the asphalt cools.
Woodland has produced roofing felt since the early 1980’s, and recently expanded their production capacity. As part of this expansion, they installed a new heating & storage system for liquid asphalt. The system, manufactured by Heatec, includes two vertical asphalt storage tanks, a multi-circuit hot oil heater, unloading & transfer pumps for asphalt, and piping for asphalt & heat transfer oil.
Liquid asphalt in the tanks must be stored at high temperatures in order to keep it in a liquid state. The tanks are heated by heat transfer oil pumped through coils in the bottom of the tanks. The heat transfer oil is heated and circulated by the hot oil heater.
Each of the tanks has 30,000 gallon storage capacity. The tanks include 6 inches of insulation on the top and sides, as well as 3 inches of insulation on the bottom.
The tanks also feature vent condensers to reduce emissions. Vapors from the heated asphalt are captured and cooled in the vent condensers, then return to the tank in a liquefied state. Radar level gauges monitor the level of asphalt in the tank.
The hot oil heater features two circuits for heat transfer oil. One circuit is dedicated to the two asphalt tanks. The other circuit provides heat to jacketed asphalt piping throughout the facility.
The heater also has a Stackpack™ economizer mounted in its exhaust stack. The economizer uses hot exhaust gases to pre-heat the heat transfer oil before it enters the heater. This reduces the needed output from the heater’s burner, which in turn reduces its fuel consumption and operating cost.
Two existing horizontal asphalt tanks and two asphalt booster heaters are also located at the facility. All were manufactured by Heatec in the early 1980’s and are still in use today.
