For C.W. Matthews, business is booming. Over the last several years, the company has made huge capital investments to future-proof their company and set them up for continued growth.

In 2020, they bought and installed two new asphalt plants in Georgia and recently saw an opportunity to upgrade another location near the Tennessee border.

“The Chattanooga area is thriving and there are a lot of projects in that area C.W. Matthews wanted to be a part of,” Greg Taylor, Superintendent at C.W. Matthews says. “This location is 25 miles from the state line and we had an existing plant in Dalton but knew it was time for an upgrade.”

The previous plant in that location had been there since 1989 and C.W. Matthews wanted to put something new in place that could handle increased capacity and different mix types.

“We installed another Astec Double Barrel at this location,” Taylor says. “That’s mainly what we run at all of our other locations and they work very well.”

C.W. Matthews owns 27 asphalt plants across the state of Georgia and this new install will give them an additional 150 tons per hour of hot mix.

A Smooth Install

C.W Matthews’ relied on the Astec construction team to help with the new asphalt plant installation. Astec also helped the company manage removal of the old facility starting in December of 2021.

“All the old foundations were removed and new foundations were put in their place,” Taylor says.  “The plant install started in February of 2022 and was up and running in April of 2022.”

At the same time, Astec installed custom cold feed bins for the company which would allow them the ability to create more mixes for the Tennessee and Georgia Departments of Transportation.

“The new facility will help both Matthews and outside sales with being more reliable and efficient,” Taylor says. “The increased capacity and new bins will keep the customers happy by keeping their trucks moving as well.”

With this being the third Astec plant the company installed in two years, the partnership continues to be strengthened with each interaction.

“The experience with Astec is always very smooth,” Taylor concluded. “From the sales team to the construction crew down to the support we receive, everything was top notch.”
